EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (EQ) ASSESSMENT
AND COACHING

Emotional intelligence or EQ is a concept popularized by writer Daniel Goleman in 1995. Since that time, people have learned that effective use of EQ leads to a more successful career:

  •  2 out of 3 abilities considered for success are EQ related (Goleman).
  •  IQ predicts 5% potential for success, while EQ predicts 25% (Lominger, Ltd.)
  •  7 out of the 10 factors that can derail executives are EQ related (Center for Creative Leadership).

More and more organizations are recognizing the importance of high EQ employees. Gone is the rational, dispassionate executive who shows little emotion and sensitivity. Today’s successful leader is imprinted with the 5 important characteristics of high EQ. Leadership Bridge has coined a helpful rule of thumb, “A-I-M-E-S”, to capture these 5 dimensions:

A   Awareness of your emotions
I
Checking emotional impulses
M
Channeling emotions into positive motivations
E
 Being empathetic to others’ emotions
S
Using social skills while interacting with others

Using your EQ does not mean being more emotional. It does mean combining the rational and feeling parts of your being to become a more fluid leader or manager, who can adapt to varied situations and use a multitude of styles and abilities. Golemen puts it this way. . . “These leaders are sensitive to the impact they are having on others and adjust their style to get the best results.”

How does a person tap into the roots of his or her EQ and put it into action in the workplace? Leadership Bridge consultants have helped employees assess their levels of EQ and build development plans to be more effective. We use a variety of tools to tease out the strengths and deficits relating to EQ:

  •  Temperament and preferences (MBTI)
  •  Personality characteristics (NEO-PIR)
  •  Thinking styles (LSI 1&2)
  •   Leadership competencies (Voices & Career Architect).

Once the levels of EQ are assessed, our consultants will help individuals and groups (1)determine their EQ needs; (2)use resources to select strategies for effectiveness; (3)write comprehensive development plans; (4)learn how to gather feedback to gauge how effectively they use these strategies; and (5)operationalize the development plan to become more EQ savvy.

Leadership Bridge consultants have helped derailing executives and managers tap into their EQ resources to reverse a trend of steely, detached management style. High potential employees have learned about their EQ strengths and weaknesses, leading them to positive career moves. Team members have been able to assess their EQ characteristics and strengthen communication, foster understanding and become more fluid in their working relationships.
